Presenter, author, and educator for writing instruction Mary Ellen Ledbetter spent time working with students and training staff this week, presenting writing lessons to students and professional development workshops with Deptford Township Schools’ English teachers.  The Texas native worked with teachers on strategies to help students add voice to their writing, hold effective writing conferences, and focus on writing successful essays for a Literary Analysis Task.

Ledbetter visited Mrs. Lubonski and Ms. Volpe’s 8th grade ELA class at Monongahela Middle School, Ms. Buck’s 7th grade ELA class, and Mrs. Pesce and Mrs. Pizzuta’s 6th grade class at Oak Valley Elementary.

“With the release of our state test scores this week, we know that our students have strong writing skills,” said English Language Arts Supervisor Danielle Lehman. “Supplementing instruction with specific, targeted workshops like these with the students and staff is another way to continue to challenge our students and motivate them to improve on their writing.”

Ledbetter earned an M.A. in English from Michigan State University and has a B.A. in English and Speech from Western Michigan University. She  has extensive teaching experience in schools across the United States and Canada, working with students from K-12 and college.  As a consultant and presenter, Mary has spoken at NCTE, TMSA, Gifted and Talented Workshops, and National and International Reading Seminars and is currently a presenter/consultant for the Bureau of Education and Research. She owns and operates Mel’s Pen LLC.
