Education Foundation – History
The Deptford Township Foundation for Educational Excellence was formed in 1997 and consisted of business leaders, educators, retired educators, and parents. They wanted to help Deptford teachers to try new and creative ideas that could not be covered by the school budget. After some fundraising and meeting the necessary legalities, the first 3 grants were awarded for the 1999-2000 school year.
In the past 18 years, the number of trustees has grown. It currently includes retired and current principals and teachers, business representatives, the current Superintendent, Board of Education President, parents and 2 Deptford High School students. We are currently at 25 dedicated and hard-working members.
Over the past 18 years, we have relied on donations and fundraisers to provide as many grants as possible. This year, out of 7 applications, we awarded 6 grants totaling about $7,000. Through the years, we have awarded 73 grants, totaling over $68,000. The children of Deptford Township are the beneficiaries of these innovative programs. Each and every school has received one or more grants. We have stepped up our fundraising activities, so more and more grants can be awarded.
