Deptford Township Schools is about to embark on another journey into the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career) testing. This journey will be sustained across New Jersey. Successful completion of this assessment, meeting academic proficiency with one of the state approved alternate assessments, or meeting the criteria of the NJDOE Portfolio Appeal is a graduation requirement for high school students. The following chart documents the criteria required to meet graduation requirements:

The staff of Deptford Township Public Schools has been diligently preparing all our students to be successful on this state assessment. At the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year you received data from last year’s assessment. This data is valuable to you and the school district. It allows teachers and administrators to evaluate our programs and use the data to determine how to focus our efforts on curriculum and instruction. We can now identify exactly where we need to strengthen and align our students’ knowledge with the Common Core Standards. As a community we should not look past this assessment no matter the grade nor age of the student. Our elementary and middle school students should be using this test to collect information about their individual weaknesses, as well as prepare themselves for this state assessment when they reach high school. Everyone knows no single test can give a complete picture of student achievement, we must look at multiple measures to gain the insight required to continue increasing student achievement. This is a valuable piece of the puzzle that can lead us in the correct direction.
The state of New Jersey has been requiring students to take an assessment to display proficiency for many years. The PARCC exam is simply a new model of this standard. The only difference between PARCC, and any other assessment taken in New Jersey, is that the assessment has been brought into the 21st century with technology. Most, if not all, of our students live in a digital environment, so this change should not have any influence on them. Teachers, jobs, and college professors assess performance of their people on a regular basis and this is simply an extension of that…an assessment of where our students are and how we can do better.
When a student does not participate in the annual state test, we all lose out on valuable information. We are committed to student achievement, and the PARCC test raises the bar for our students to ensure they are on the path to success. We are confident that with the quality instruction delivered by Deptford Township Schools, and your support, our students can meet and exceed our expectations.
If you still choose to have your child refuse to take the assessment, please visit our website at www.deptford.k12.nj.us and click on the PARCC tab to download the necessary paperwork. If you met with an administrator last year in order to refuse testing for your child, please just fill out the refusal form again and send it into the building principal. If you did not have a meeting with an administrator last year and intend to refuse testing you must schedule a meeting with the building administrator. The administration will be flexible in our meeting schedules to ensure all parents can have a meeting.
I feel confident that all students in the Deptford Township Schools are prepared for this assessment and they should all take the assessment with confidence. This assessment is nothing new to education and we must continue to show improvement within the state guidelines.
PLEASE NOTE: There are some significant changes starting with our current freshmen, the class of 2020. The class of 2020 can demonstrate graduation assessment proficiency through the same alternative means as those in the classes of 2017-2019, provided that students in the class of 2020 take ALL PARCC assessments associated with the high school level courses for which they are enrolled. If students/families for the class of 2020 plan on refusing to take the PARCC assessment, they will not be able to utilize alternative assessments to meet the high school graduation assessment requirement. The students that refuse will have to rely on passing one of the PARCC assessments in ELA and Math to earn their high school diploma.
For the class of 2021(current 8th graders), students must pass the PARCC Algebra I and PARCC ELA 10 Assessments to receive their High School Diploma. Failure to do so would result in students having to demonstrate assessment proficiency by meeting the criteria of the portfolio appeals process. The portfolio appeals process can only be utilized if students have taken all PARCC assessments for which they have been enrolled during their high school career. Again, students in the class of 2021 must pass PARCC Algebra I and PARCC ELA 10. No other testing alternatives (e.g. SAT, ACT, PSAT, ASVAB) can be utilized except for the portfolio appeals process.
